Established
in December 1950, the Nevada Test Site is 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas,
and occupies approximately 1,375 square miles.

Test, at Frenchman Flat on January 27, 1951, was the first shot at the
facility, where a total of 928 atomic (fission) and nuclear (fusion)
weapons tests were conducted.
In
1992, following the nuclear test moratorium, the Nevada Test Site was
declared part of the National Environ- mental Research Park Network
by the U.S. Department of Energy, and public tours are available.
