April 9, 1981. The nuclear-powered submarine USS George Washington rammed and sank the Japanese freighter Nissho Maru while surfacing in the East China Sea.

The U.S. gave no explanation for the submarine's proximity to the Japanese mainland.

Commissioned as the Navy's first Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine, the George Washington conducted the first underwater launch of the Polaris nuclear missile.
